My friend sent me this amazing corgi comic! (originals found here)
THIS IS THE CUTEST THING EVER
I still don’t understand because it doesn’t fucking matter.
But why are people so hung up on their race and ethnicity? Do I care if your “Italian” friend nominated you for a dumb ice water challenge is Italian? Do I care that you have to be a “white” girl to post pictures of your Starbucks on instagram? Do I care that just because I’m “Mexican” means that I automatically like spicy food for that reason?
No. You could be nominated for an ice water challenge by anyone, you don’t have to be a white girl to post pics of your Starbucks since that just means you really have no life, and it is a coincidence that some close people to me who I know who are Mexican do not like spicy food. And nobody else should care, either.
It’s not like I’m saying you can’t take pride and celebration if it really means that much to you because you have every right to do so.
But that doesn’t mean that I can’t express my frustration about this matter and I also have every right to express how I feel about things.
I just think it’s ridiculous that people need to add race or ethnicity or both to someone’s description. Who they are in that matter has nothing to do with the story when it’s so entirely irrelevant, like who cares if the person that purchased a bottle of Coke is black and who cares if the person who farted in public is Hispanic.
And, just to say, does your dividing my ethnic background into fractions with halves have anything to do with what I feel as a human and who I am as a person? Do I somehow inherently have attributes of multiple cultures within me?
Your race and ethnicity has nothing to do with the quality of your life. I can be an entirely different species and be from another planet, I will still be a damn ballet dancer. I know other people will disagree and think I’m wrong, but I think they’re wrong when they feel the need to use someone’s ethnic background as an adjective.
